Thug Life Preview: SWOT Analysis of Kamal Haasan, Mani Ratnam's multi-starrer

PUBLISHED DATE | 04/Jun/2025

38 years since Mani Ratnam directed Kamal Haasan in a Godfather-adjacent cult hit Nayakan (1987), the ace director has reunited with the ace performer for a June 5 release titled Thug Life. Thug Life is Mani Ratnam's first film since the hugely successful Ponniyin Selvan movies, but is coming on the heels of a box-office disaster like Indian 2 (2024) for Kamal Haasan.

A SWOT analysis of Thug Life follows:

Strengths:

Kamal & Mani Ratnam-A Brand in Themselves: Both Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam are iconic names, each a brand by themselves. Their reunion on Thug Life after 38 years, raises the stakes. Given their individual and combined impact on cinema, Kamal Haasan’s performance in a quintessential Mani Ratnam movie, thus becomes a major strength, and something to look forward to.

Stellar Cast: Besides Kamal Haasan, Thug Life's cast includes Silambarasan TR, Trisha, Ashok Selvan, Joju George, Nasser, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Abhirami, Pankaj Tripathi, Ali Fazal, Vadivukarasai, Sanya Malhotra among others. These are performers known for their acting caliber. With Mani Ratnam, director of big ensemble movies like Chekka Chivantha Vaanam and Ponniyin Selvan, the cast's performance is expected to shine manifold, with each getting their moment in Thug Life.

Many of the cast combinations, primarily Kamal Haasan and Silamabrasan TR are first time collaborations. This brings a fresh aspect.

A.R. Rahman's Music: Nayakan, Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam's only other film besides Thug Life, is such a cult hit musically that despite AR Rahman's long proven combination with Mani Ratnam, questions were raised on whether another timeless album like Nayakan could be delivered. However AR Rahman's Thug Life album is not only a hit, but has garnered a ton of attention for being completely unique from his usual composition for Mani Ratnam movies.

Rich Technicals: Besides AR Rahman's music, Thug Life comes with some of the richest technicals seen in either a Mani Ratnam or a Kamal Haasan movie. Ravi K Chandran's cinematography, Anbariv's action, and the re-recoding by Oscar winning Craigg Mann are stand-outs among the strengths.

Weakness:

Predictability in the Trailer: In today’s era where audiences are super-smart and have access to countless films, many can predict the plot just by watching a trailer. Thug Life trailer lacked a standout "wow" factor, and hinted at a conventional underworld revenge drama. However, if this was a deliberate move to mislead and preserve surprises, as Kamal and Trisha have hinted during promotions, it may actually work in favor of Thug Life after the film's release.

Opportunities:

With no major Indian releases around the same time, Thug Life has a clear window to rake in impressive numbers worldwide. Especially given the number of formats (standard, IMAX4DXD-BoxICEMX4DScreenX, EPIQ, etc) it is releasing across the globe in.

Threats:

  • Thug Life opens at 4 AM internationally. With the domestic first day first show scheduled hours later, piracy, and word-of-mouth loom as potential threats for this film.
  • Thug Life looks dangerously close to Chekka Chivantha Vaanam (2018), Mani Ratnam's only other gangster drama besides Nayakan (1987). The threat of comparisons also loom at this point.
  • A runtime of 2 hours, 45 minutes, and 42 seconds can be risky, especially when it isn't supported by a classic story like Ponniyin Selvan, and given that the last Mani Ratnam film outside the Ponniyin Selvan series to exceed the 160-minute mark, was the moderately received Kadal (2013).
  • Kamal Haasan who saw a much needed career revival with Vikram (2022), is yet to deliver another headline-hit since. A lot rides on the Thug Life's box-office performance as a result.
