Tourist Family Review -  A sweet and charming film with dollops of goodness!

Debutant Abishan Jeevinth's Tourist Family sets off with a Sri Lankan family landing on the shores of Rameshwaram. Before that, we have a shot of them looking at the sea from the shores of Sri Lanka (the shot we saw in the earliest promo of the film). We don't get to see their struggles in crossing the sea. Abishan Jeevinth isn't focusing on the magnitude of their physical struggles. He is more inclined towards the emotional aspects. You do shed a lot of tears. But don't get it wrong. Tourist Family isn't a tear jerker. It is anything but that.
Running at just over two hours, Tourist Family is packed with laughter and emotions. It is fascinating that the film keeps alternating between these two emotions and at times even within the same scene. And more fascinating is that it really works. The emotions aren't diluted by the laughter nor the laughter prevents you from shedding a tear or two.

There is this stretch in the second half where the emotional baggage that two primary characters have been carrying are let out. It is one of the most important stretches of the film and it keeps churning out jokes at the most unexpected of places.

The acting is good all around. The film is actually a bit melodramatic at times. But this is melodrama that is done well. Even when you wonder if certain scenarios are plausible, the overall feel of the film is something that makes you buy into the actions of the characters. And that is perhaps the very intention of the filmmaker. He wants the audience to appreciate what kindness and humanity can achieve. The film might seem too simplistic at times but maybe that is the takeaway from these kind of films. Maybe things are actually simple and kindness is what can trump all the odds.

Bottomline
Tourist Family exhibits a kind of goodness that feels contagious and one that you want to carry with you and spread all around.
