For a nation hooked on movies and cricket, India surprisingly has never brought the sports to cinema halls for the theater audience. However given the rise in digital streaming, and OTT ideas are being thrown out in a desperate attempt at keeping the theater business going.
The Tamil Nadu Theater And Multiplex Owners' Association, which is often known to voice out changes they'd like to see in the state's cinema hall scene, has called for provisions (laws) that enable theater owners to screen entertainment programs, including sports events like the IPL cricket matches.
The TN theater owners' association has also requested the Tamil Nadu government to withdraw the Local Body Entertainment Tax (LBET), which is levied in addition to the GST on movie tickets. Tamil movies these days make it to OTT platforms within 28 days of theatrical release.
The association has once again called for increasing this window to 56 days.
