AR Rahman is just like a father to me - Bassist Mohini Dey

Mohini Dey is a bassist who worked for AR Rahman for 8 years till 2019, and 5 years ago she moved to the US to work with International artists. She currently resides in Nashville, Tennessee and has inadvertently become a topic of discussion in AR Rahman's divorce with wife Saira Banu.

It all started when Saira Banu's Mumbai based lawyer Vandana Shah announced via her Instagram handle on November 20, 2024, that AR Rahman's wife has filed for their dissolution of marriage due to 'significant emotional strain'. AR Rahman followed it up with a statement of his own, when he put out a tweet at midnight to confirm the couple's separation. Incidentally, Mohini Dey had also announced her separation from her husband Mark that same day, which had caught the attention of the Rahman fan-following.

While the 'Rahmaniacs', as the fans call themselves, were busy expressing heart-break over the back to back 'sad news' of AR Rahman and Mohini Dey, the Tamil-Indian media seems to have picked up on this, and formed their own 'link-up' stories, without even paying attention to the significant age gap between Dey and Rahman [The July 1996 born Mohini Dey is 28 years old, the same age as December 1995 born Khatija Rahman, the first born daughter of the 57 year old AR Rahman. Dey was 17 years old when she first collaborated with AR Rahman for Coke Studio Season 3 in 2013. Mohini Dey and her former saxophonist husband Mark Hart Such have both received shout-outs from AR Rahman in the past].

Mohini Dey seems to have been part of an US tour during her divorce announcement, and now that it has ended, the bass guitarist has come out with a video and statement, putting an end to all the speculations.

"It is utterly unbelievable to see the amount of misinformation and baseless assumptions/claims against me & @arrahman. It feels criminal that the media has vulgarised the two events.

I honour my times as a kid working with @arrahman  throughout my 8.5 years of working with him for his movies, tours, etc.

Its disheartening to see that people have no respect, sympathy or empathy towards emotional matters like this.

It saddens me to see people’s state of mind.

@arrahman is a legend and he is just like father to me!

I have many role models & father figures in life that have played vital roles in my career and upbringing.

To name a few- My dad who taught me everything music (who I lost a year ago) and then @ranjitbarot1 who introduced me to the industry, @louizbanksofficial who shaped me & @arrahman who gave me the freedom to shine in his shows and his musical arrangements during recording sessions.

I cherish and treasure that and will always do!

Media/Paps do not understand the effect it has on people’s minds and lives. Be sensitive.

I don't owe anyone any explanations but also, I don't want this to brew and interrupt my day so, Kindly stop with the false claims & respect our privacy.

Love,
Mo"

In the video attached with this statement, Mohini Dey also notes that she is the same age as Khatija Rahman, AR Rahman and Saira Banu's first born. Mohini Dey's video script:

"Hey guys now that I've finally finished my tour and I have a moment to breathe, I just wanted to come here and tell you guys that I have a lot of father figures., role models in my life, and I've been really fortunate and grateful to have them play vital roles in my upbringing.

And AR happens to be one of them. By AR I mean AR Rahman. I respect him a lot, he is just like my father, he is actually a little bit younger than my dad, and his daughter (Khatija) is exactly my age I think. And we have a lot of love and respect for each other.

And I worked with him in his band as his bassist for eight and a half years until 5 years ago I moved to the US, and I associated myself with other pop artists in the US. And I have my own band as well and music that I tour with. Anyways, long story short please be kind and respect our privacy. It (divorce) is a personal matter, and it is painful. It is a painful process.

So please be kind.
