Marking the fourth death anniversary of legendary Indian playback singer SP Balasubrahmanyam aka SPB on September 25, 2024, incumbent Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin announced that a state government order has been passed to rename the street SPB lived in, as SP Balasbrahmanyam street. 

A statement from the Tamil Nadu CM’s office said, “Singing more than 40,000 songs in various languages, raining music on the hearts of Tamil people for more than half a century with his melodious voice, composing music for many films, acting in films and being a multi-talented artist, the Padma Shri of the Union Government, Padma Vibhushan awardee and loved one of former Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, S.P. Balasubrahmanyam left us on September 25 in 2020. Even though time separated him, he is still in our hearts. To add to his fame, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has announced that the Main Road of Nungambakkam Kamdar Nagar, where he lived, will be named ‘S.P. Balasubrahmanyam Salai (Road)’.”

The Tamil Nadu CM also took to his individual X page to write, “As one of the millions of fans of Balu, I am happy and proud to announce that on his #SPBalasubrahmanyam anniversary, the main road of Kamdar Nagar, where he lived, will be named S.P. Balasubramaniam Road.”

Kamdar Nagar in Nungambakkam, Chennai is home not just to the late SPB's residence, but also to SPB's close friend and living legend Ilaiyaraaja's building. SPB's son SP Charan, who is a playback singer himself, took to his X page to thank the Tamil Nadu government, as did well wishers of SPB from the Tamil film fraternity.

Six time National award winning SP Balasubrahmanyam was active in the films from 1960s till his death in 2020. One of the most sought-after singers in the Indian film industry, SPB was posthumously honoured a Padma Vibhushan in 2021.
