Indian 2 starring Kamal Haasan in the lead, is a Shankar directed sequel to the actor-director's vigilante blockbuster Indian (1996). Indian 2 released in theaters on July 12, 2024, and six months before the movie's release, Netflix announced that Indian 2's digital premiere would be on their OTT platform.
A recent trend in Tamil/Indian cinema is streaming platforms deciding the final price of a movie, post monitoring its reception or performance at the box-office. Reportedly Indian 2's reception has prompted Netflix to re-negotiate the deal it made with the Lyca Productions banner.
If reports are anything to go by, then Indian 2's OTT release is on halt as Netflix is trying to bring down Indian 2's OTT price from an estimated Rs. 130 Cr. to nearly 50% of the sum. Indian 3, a sequel which is also in the pipeline to hit theater screens, is additionally at stake because of this OTT deal renegotiation between Netflix and Lyca Productions.
Buzz in the grapevine is that if Lyca Productions does not agree to Netflix's watered-down terms, then it stands the risk of being boycotted by other OTT platforms as well.
