Best Technicalities in Tamil Cinema, 2019

In 2019, people who worked behind the camera aka the technical heads who run their respective departments yet work closely with the director of a movie had some impeccable work put forward. We have highlighted some best work here, which makes these films as great as they are.

Best Sound Design

Sync Cinemas (Kaithi): The film's backdrop was not common for Tamil cinema and despite that every technical aspect of the movie seemed on-point including sound design. One sequence that stood out in the whole film is the slowing of the bullets being fired towards the end and the sound effects for the same were much raved about even among the theater audience.

Sync Cinemas (Game Over): Another work of sound design that held up the film throughout was Game Over.

Best Art-Direction:

Vijay Adhinanthan (Super Deluxe) : Be it bringing the traditional architectural house into Chennai or maintaining a colour-coded aesthetic for each of the story-lines, Vijay Adhinathan's designs for Super Deluxe provided the apt amount of elevation required for the story. His work was one of the main elements in the flow of the film's narration.

Best Editing

R Sudharshan (OththaSeruppu):  Parthiban's film unusually focussed on just one actor for all of the film's run-time and R. Sudharshan's work at the edit table kept the material seamless while providing a narrative that enhanced both the cinematography and the drama in the story.

Best Cinematography:

Vijay Karthik Kannan (Aadai): Showcasing a disrobed heroine for most parts in a film without taking focus away from the narrative and maintaining the aesthetics requires a lot of trick-angles and Vijay Karthik Kannan did just that in Aadai.

Tirru (Petta): Tirru, on the other hand, transcended the traditionally flat framing and brought in a dynamic palette for a star-vehicle like Petta.

Best Stunt Choreography:

Anbariv (Kaithi): It isn't for nothing that stunt choreographers Anbariv have the title 'National Award Winners'. Even in a full-length action film like Kaithi, which was mounted on an unusual backdrop for the action, the duo brought in thoroughly engaging yet to-a-point believable stunts. Kaithi was two-thirds pure action and for making it entertaining, Anbariv are 2019's best stunt choreographers.

Also mention-worthy in this category are Peter Hein for Asuran and Dhilip Subbrayan for Suriya's high-level stunts in Kaappaan.

Best Costume Design

Niharika khan (Petta): Rajinikanth was 68 when he shot for Petta and to show him 20 years younger required a lot of fresh styling that wouldn't stick out. Niharika Khan nailed the job in that aspect.

Komal Shahani, Pallavi Singh and Anu Vardhan(Bigil): Similarly in Bigil, a 45 year old Vijay was shown both as 20 years younger and older. The team of Komal Shahani, Pallavi Singh and Anu Vardhan pulled that off with ease.

Best Dialogues

Nerkonda Paarvai: A legal drama imparting social responsibility is largely dialogue-driven and Nerkonda Paarvai lived upto all the expectations thanks to its hard-hitting dialogues.

Equally effective was Vetrimaaran's writings for Asuran which was also imparting life lessons.

Best Choreography

Shobi (Bigil): One of this year's 'wow' choreographies came from Shobhi for the 'Verithanam' song from Bigil. Not only was the use of side-dancers innovative, but it was also visually effective.

Another appealing dance choreo was Ruel Dausan Varindani's for Paisa Note song in Comali and 's for 'Hey Nijame' Sathish Krishnan's choreography in Enai Noki Paayum Thota.

Best CG

Knack Studios (Monster): The scope for CG was higher in Monster as the rat was one of the pivotal characters in the movie but the team has been recognized for also making the character as realistic as they could. And given that monster was a mid-sized budgeted film, such a feat is indeed remarkable from Knack Studios.
