Asuran Songs - Music Review

Suhansid Srikanth

'Kathari Poovazhagi', the first track of the album is a vibrant folk number! Sung by Velmurugan, Rajalakshmi, Napolia and written by K. Ekadesi.. the number reminds a heavy fragrance of 'Otha Sollaala' from Aadukalam. Velmurugan's rooted tone charms a naive beauty to the track.

Easily, the best track of the pack is 'Pollaadha Boomi'! Sung by Dhanush, G.V.Prakash Kumar, Ken Karunaas and TeeJay, the song acts as the soul bearer of the soundtrack. Yugabharathi brilliantly pens the theme and mood of the novel and the film into lyrics like 'Kattaariyum Kodaaliyum kaiyendhum vaazhva maathaadho?'. And when Dhanush hits a high note as he sings 'Aathaadi! En mavandhaane asagaaya sooran! Kaatteri vandhaalum kalangaadha veeran!', the number, for that brief moment, turns achingly beautiful!

'Yen Minukki', another favorite pick of mine from the soundtrack is sung by TeeJay and Chinmayi. All the 'Dhaamla', 'Yemla', 'Umma' of Tirunelveli slang have been beautifully peddled throughout the song by lyricist Eknath. Chinmayi brings in these little sweet renditions in singing lines like 'Naanum kotti.. aayitene.. Ada idhu edhanaala?' which sweetens the track all the way! The number is also rich in imageries such as 'Panai mela kalayam..', 'Paraikkulla isai..' that organically adds a rural flavour to the album! '

Blood Bath', a monstrous roar track written and sung by Arunraja Kamaraj is a Vetrimaaran's take of a style that's iconically RGVish! The song literally blows a heavy trumpet call for violence! It warms up the protagonist against all the sufferings, greed and betrayal! 'Kuruthi dhaagam adikkudhu.. Pazhiyai theerkka thudikkudhu.. Pazhaya pagaiyin mazhaiyil nanaiya asura vettai nadakkudhu!' says what Vekkai (novel from which Asuran is adapted) is all about! And Arunraja along with an arousing chorus majestically delivers the power this track demands!

Bottomline: Composed by G.V.Prakash, Vetri Maaran's upcoming film, Asuran's soundtrack is intense, cinematic and drives the listener to witness the rawness of the lands and times where the story is set in!

Rating : 3.5/5
