Box Office Lies (Visitor Column)

Box Office Lies - Tamil Movie Industry

Some interesting incidents happened this Monday that showed how Box Office lies are systematically propagated by leading men in the industry. Certain section of popular media received some imaginary numbers from leading production houses and they published it without questioning or checking the validity. Producers, Media people and leading trade analysts backed these numbers and started publishing it immediately claiming "7aum Arivu has grossed 40.25 crores and Velayutham has grossed 40 crores during the first 5 days at the Box Office".

In fact, a number of people in the industry started exchanging congratulatory messages based on these fake information saying Tamil cinema is rocking with both the films of Diwali collecting Rs.40 Crores each world wide. One of the leading trade analysts also backed such preposterous collection numbers by saying the Box-Office collections of Diwali films prove the victory and growing reach of Tamil Cinema worldwide.

Fans outright rejection of "Official" Box Office Numbers

Fans are super sharp these days, immediately saw through these blatant lies and unanimously rejected the Box Office collection numbers and called it "fake". There are some VALID questions they placed in front of these sources for which there was no credible response.

  • Size of Market - Enthiran and Mankatha made 35 Crores and 30 Crores respectively in 5 days(estimates). Both ran houseful shows with maximum number of screens possible in domestic and international markets. How is it possible for the market to become 250% larger overnight being able to acommodate 80 Crores of collection for Velayudham and 7aum Arivu within the same 5 day time period?
  • Duration of collection - Superhit movies with record-breaking opening like Mankatha took almost 40 days to collect 80 Crores in the Box Office. How is it possible for Diwali movies combined to collect the amounts within just 5 days.
  • Size of International Market - As per the doctored report, the International Box Office numbers showed up as 50% of total collection (For e.g., 19 Crores from TN and remaining 21 Crores from outside for one of the Diwali releases). Again, this was squashed since it is well known that Tamil Cinema's overseas revenue is less than 10-15% of worldwide Box Office revenue.

Reaction to Fans Questions

This unexpected resistance from fans took the leading media and "trade sources" by surprise and one of them shot back sharply "why this negativism on the figures quoted by the Producers. It is their film, their investment & finally their revenues. We must accept & move [on]. If anyone has any problem with the figures, then people must collect figures from all theatres across world & report than doubting it."

POWER TO PEOPLE

Vijay, Ajith and Suriya Fans, all in unison sent a strong message on Monday by saying that they are not going to believe everything that is dished out to them as facts just because it comes from the top!
