Rajinikanth's Kaala may have hit theater screens during the Ramzan week (which many trade analysts see as a lean period for movie theaters) but nothing seems to be deterring the film in raking moolah at the box-office. Breaking all time day 1 record at the Chennai city box-office, Kaala has managed to collect Rs. 1.76 crore (gross) emerging the highest day 1 collector in the city. Kaala has beaten Mersal and Vivegam to garner the top position whereas it has surpassed Pa. Ranjith's earlier film with Rajini (Kabali) by at-least Rs. 0.65 crore (gross) in its day 1 collections in the city.
As of today, the top 10 Chennai city day 1 Tamil film grossers stand as follows:
