Vijay Sethupathi and Trisha have teamed up for the first time in 96 movie. The film is directed by C. Prem Kumar who earlier handled the cinematography for Naduvula Konjam Pakkatha Kanom. The film is bankrolled by Nandagopal of Madras Enterprises.

Vijay Sethupathi essays a role of a wildlife photographer. Vijay Sethupathi in a recent interview had said, "96 is a mature love story. It's about love, longing, nostalgia, togetherness and the emotional tension that a couple experiences. It was an excellent experience to work with Trisha in this film."
