Saithan Review – An Intriguing thriller that turns uneven towards the climax !

Bharath Vijayakumar

One thing is a given about Vijay Antony. He tries to be a part of movies that sort of treads a different path from the mainstream but remains encapsulated within the commercial framework. Saithan toes the same line.

Plot:

A psychological thriller that revolves around a guy who keeps hearing a voice inside him that leads to dire consequences.

Cast:

Vijay Antony does a very good job. As the psychologically affected protagonist he comes up with a credible performance.Arundhathi Nair is an impressive find. As the expressive Aishwarya she makes a mark. But in the crucial portions revolving around the mysterious Jayalakshmi you sense the lack of experience. Elaborating more would be a spoiler. The villains are a definite weak link.

Music:

The BGM plays a huge part in the film. Much like the films that he does, Vijay Antony also comes up with these scores that have a slightly eccentric streak but something that the masses can lap up as well.

Direction:

Pradeep Krishnamoorthy has kept things very simple. The thriller element plays out very well and he has not resorted to any gimmicks to try and infuse any artificial confusion by throwing a redundant angle into the mix. Though the film keeps playing these paranormal incidents, the execution makes sure everything looks quite believable and seamless. There are virtually no jump scares and this aspect is definitely commendable. Logic too is kept intact but the last act could have definitely played out better. It is definitely not deplorable but is surely the weakest part of the film. The half hearted attempt to manufacture heroism falls flat. It is more about the execution rather than the intent that plays the spoilsport here. You have done all the good work and then you sort of settle down to something like this. Thankfully the damage is minimal and the film remains unscathed to a large extent.

Bottomline:

Saithan keeps things extremely interesting before settling for a climax that is a few notches below the standard that it had set itself all through. But it is definitely another notable film from Vijay Antony that does a lot of things right.
