Saattai has noble intentions, but the movie is let down by over-exaggerated and preachy screenplay.

Debutant director Anbazhagan’s intention to convey a strong message to the faulty teachers is praiseworthy but he has not done it without flaws. The positive aspects of the film are the powerful dialogues, Imman's music and Samthurakani's presence. On the flip side, the screenplay is over-exaggerated and the characters look very artificial.(more)

The lash isn't strong enough to make the point clear

On the whole, Saattai shows the education system from the perspectives of the students, teachers and the parents. With the news that just over 2,000 teachers, out of the 6 lakh appearing for the test, pass the state board's teacher's standard examination going viral in Tamil Nadu, Saattai is a timely film. But, considering that the preaching in the film is what an average student listens to everyday and likewise between the teachers and parents, the film fails to make the intended impact.(more)

Above Average

Samuthirakani has come out with a stunning performance as the idealistic teacher. Thambi Ramaiah with a ridiculous wig is loud and irritating in a negative role.On the whole, Saattai is a decent entertainer which harps loudly on the message it wants to convey.(more)

Educating and Entertaining

With plenty of passion infused by lead actor Samudhrakani, the film scores a point or two and is more than a half-decent movie.(more)

Sattai deserves a standing ovation for handling a sensitive subject.

Sattai is loosely based on Sidney Poitier`s 1967 classic 'To Sir with Love', where a black teacher embarks on a journey to inspire and reform the lives of white students from the slums.(more)

A commendable effort that would have worked better with less number of messages.

The aim is lofty, the theme, noble. It is in execution that director Anbazhagan falters a little. Still, Saattai (U) is worthy of notice. Sparing the rod isn't enough understanding the psyche of students is imperative, is one of the messages that Saattai imparts.(more)

Saattai is an interesting watch

Saattai ends up a preachy tale and the dialogues go overboard at places. But, forget all for the noble intentions of the director, who in his very first film has touched a sensitive issue and come up trumps.(more)

The sad thing is that the director goes about this task with less subtlety and more sermonizing, with the result that the scenes where he wishes to make a point come across as totally preachy.

Director's intentions are quite commendable. After all, all he wants to do is shine a light on the pathetic standards to which schools can fall due to the callous attitude of teachers and highlight the need for the teachers to change with the times and use innovative methods to ensure all-round development of students.
