Samar lacks thrills
Samar is again proof of the importance of a watertight screenplay, particularly for a thriller. A lot of thought has been put into creating the basic idea and director. The end product is not that captivating.(more)

An all new experience for Tamil commercial cinema viewers
It is technically slick with great camera work by Richard M Nathan in Bangkok and Pudhuchery, and film is racy at 2 hours 15 minutes. The action scenes are superbly choreographed by foreign stuntmen and Vishal chasing John Vijay through narrow alleys and streets of Bangkok is shot stylishly. (more)

A watchable suspense flick which could have been better
The movie has been shot well by Richard Nathan who also has a small role in the movie. The aerial shots of Bangkok are awe-inspiring and the Poikaal Kuthirai number has been interestingly shot and placed very well too. Dharan's racy and eerie BGM score sounds apt for the suspense action genre of the film. Among Yuvan's songs, his score for the Azhago Azhago track is melodious.(more)

Samar is a commercial entertainer
Yuvan Shankar Raja has come up with a score that plays along to the thriller genre but doesn't linger on in memory. Richard M Nathan's camera-work is snazzy, especially during the song sequences. (more)

Samar is a must-watch movie for action lovers.
Technically, Richard M. Nathan's cinematography stands out of all technical departments. Be it in a chase sequences or forest scene, he has done a neat job. Yuvan's song 'Azhago azhagu...' is good and nothing more can be said about the album. Dharan Kumar's background score fails big time. However, S Ramakrishnan's dialogues are excellent. Last but not least, the director gets full marks for making a different kind of attempt and also for coming up with a good action-thriller.(more)

Samar is an engaging film that is quite a different attempt for Tamil cinema
If there is something to nitpick, it is only that the film never transcends its genre thrills to become something more. It is well scripted and well shot, and competently acted as well, but lacks a truly great moment or performance. And, barring Azhago Azhagu..., the other songs feel unwarranted. (more)
