A light hearted conventional film that works in few portions and just about manages to engage

The idea of the movie is quite simple and the director Nattu Dev does a decent job in delivering an output that would satisfy quite the majority. Technically too, Puppy is not bad at all. The true hero of the technicians seems like music director Dharan Kumar whose numbers are quite captivating and he has also produced a refreshing background score work. Cinematography angles and frames by Deepak Kumar Padhy are decent and so is the edit by Richie. The run time of a 109 minutes is a big bonus for this film and there is not much time wasted on anything that seems a little unimportant.(more)

Despite a predictable storyline, Puppy engages decently with humor and swift screenplay.

The film could have engaged throughout as it does in the comedy scenes. A consistently funnier screenplay could have made the narrative more entertaining. But overall, Puppy is a fairly engaging watch that is shouldered by Yogi Babu's humor initially but later develops with good emotional connect, interesting conflicts and fast-paced screenplay.(more)

A fun film that bites as much as it can chew

Does this make Puppy a sell-out or is it a smart move? Why should a movie like Puppy even need a feel-good message tucked in towards the end? Imagine if American Pie had a statutory warning - 'Leaving food out in the open is injurious to the... health?' But again, if this is what it takes for characters in movies to talk about delayed periods, pregnancy testing kits, and condoms, without resorting to hushed whispers, stifled giggles and winking of the eyes, then... so be it. Laboured into adolescence

The film also has Anirudh singing about how it feels great to hook up, and then we have Gautham Menon (in the second half) singing about why that one night stand was a mistake!(more)

The screenplay fails to engage audience in crucial scenes

The whole story revolves around two or three characters, and hence, there are instances where some scenes appear far-stretched. A plot like this require a few nail-biting moments, but the screenplay fails to engage audience in crucial scenes and becomes too predictable, making it a little difficult for viewers to empathise with the lead characters.(more)

A harmless youth-friendly film that is mostly engaging with a few letdowns!

Going in-depth, the film leaves with mixed thoughts. A few scenes are long-drawn-out, but they end well with a clap-worthy dialogue. Crucial situations that revolve around the main issue between the lead-pair could have handled in a better way. But the director Nattu Dev taps the comedy angle correctly along with a couple of quality emotional moments, delivering a joyfully watchable final product.(more)

May go well with certain types of audiences

Varun who was seen in small roles has graduated to a hero and has aptly chosen a subject and delivers a decent performance. However, he is loud at times and has one single expression throughout the film. Samyukta is adequate, although her character is underdeveloped. Yogi Babu is a revelation and it looks as though he is the hero of the film. His gags are enjoyable and he equally shines in emotional scenes. The narrative flow is uneven as the screenplay meanders with no solid scenes. At many places, the dialogue jumps are evident because of censor mutes. Dharankumar's music is good.(more)
