A Solid Premise And A Middling Drama!

Vaanam Kottattum has a lot going for it but it never affects you the way it ought to have. Instead of fully exploiting its intriguing core, there is an attempt to pack in too much resulting in an okayish drama! (more)

Ensemble cast makes Vaanam Kottattum endearing

While the characters that Dhana and Mani Ratnam have created are certainly interesting, the plotting isn't as effective. Even if there are no dull moments, the leisurely pacing does make the film feel longer than its slightly over two-hour duration. And the sub-plot involving Baskaran is conveniently resolved, making those portions underwhelming.(more)

A warm family drama with a weak revenge parallel

Mani Ratnam once famously said that half the job of a filmmaker is taken care of, if he gets the casting right. That's what Dhana Sekaran has done by pulling off a great casting coup, that makes even the slightest of scenes look great. (more)

Vaanam Kottatum Is A Confused Mixture Featuring A Family Drama, An Action Film And A Revenge Story

Muslim man's printing press, and a lot of scenes in the film record the presence of Islam around this family wherever they go. Preetha's family is Christian and Selva is shown as someone who is empathetic towards a family that belongs to a higher class with a beach-facing home but is suffering nonetheless (Mangai at one point says, maybe we should stay middle class forever), in ways worse than his own. It's a notable choice from Dhanas part to show Chennai as this religious melting pot that we probably don't see as often as we should, and with its timing, it becomes one of Vaanam Kottattum's highlight.(more)

Sarath Kumar Makes A Smashing Comeback In A Solid, Well-acted Drama

This isn't the usual screenplay woven around a single protagonist. It takes scenic detours and gives everyone their own arc.(more)

Vikram Prabhu, Aishwarya Rajesh's drama is a feel-good, family-friendly film

Vaanam Kottatum is a decent family film that has its moments, though far and few and is more of a drizzle than the skies opening up.(more)
