Does the job!

Nayanthara seems too consciously aware in these parts where she is playing someone extremely innocent. This flavour of her remains intact through the film but it works in favour of the film later on, as her inner demon starts to unleash itself. It is as though the character Kokila by herself is wearing an innocent mask to mislead people around her. (more)

The film is an out-and-out star vehicle that keeps giving its star whistle-worthy moments. And most remarkably, it manages to stay true to its genre and ensures that the script comes before the star.

The filmmaking is top notch, and displays an eye for tasteful aesthetics - shabby-chic settings, Sivakumar Vijaya's gorgeously back-lit frames, coordinated costumes, even one-eyed tears The use of songs recalls the approach of Vignesh ShivN - they take the narrative further even as they help maintain the playful tone of the film, and ensure that things never turn too dark.(more)

Nayanthara, Nelson hit it out of the park with this one

While the references to Breaking Bad are quite obvious, Kolamaavu Kokila has a lot working in her favour. The film takes its stereotypes and delightfully subverts them on all counts, thus pushing the film into a place of constant irony.(more)

Kolamaavu Kokila proves what spectacular writing can achieve. What could have otherwise been macabre becomes a great piece of black humour.(more)

Go for the hilarious comedy sequences that will have you in splits

As expected Anirudh is the backbone of 'Kolamavu Kokila' both with his super hit songs punctuating the sequences as well as the background score that leans heavily on Spanish strings. Sivakumar Vijayan plays with lights to add reality while Nirmal's cuts is stylish without going too jazzy. Debutante Nelson has delivered a true blue dark comedy that works does bring the laughs but has not pushed the boundaries.(more)

This black comedy, directed by Nelson and starring Nayanthara, Yogi Babu and Saranya Ponvannan, needed more energy, but it has its moments

The suspense factor is criminally low and this film could have been so much more, but it's so different in so many ways that I'm just glad it exists.(more)

Nayanthara Breaks Bad in this dark entertainer

The film does remind one of Dhrishyam, but here the characters never attempt to justify things. They are a little more cold and practical. Kolamaavu Kokila had all the potential of becoming a tear-jerker, but it avoids those cliches like a plague and stays true to the tone of the film - dark and fun. And that's what makes it unmissable.(more)

An entertaining crime comedy-drama which is worth watchable for its comedy moments and for Nayanthara.

There are few logic loopholes to bring in the cinematic liberty. Humour is tried during some serious situations which could have been avoided to hold up the intensity. The base could have been established in a better manner and in a short span too. 15mins at the end is needlessly dragged and could have been cut to increase the engagement.(more)

It's a Nayanthara show all the way

There is a lot of quirky moments in this dark comedy and much of the hilarity comes from unexpected instants. The first half is entertaining with the director sticking to his genre, treating even the darkest situations with humor. However, in the second half, the film meanders a bit without any solid comic relief and the climax is also unconvincing. (more)

Nayanthara is riveting as a drug peddler in a film laced with dark humour

There are Breaking Bad influences throughout the film. The drawbacks are there in plenty. After a racy first half, the pace slackens in the second half, along with some logical loopholes in the plot. However, at the end of the day, it is a Nayanthara show and she shines bright once again.(more)
