Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Mallika Dutt Gharde] adorn the film with fascinating characters and inspirational sub-plots that advance into a stunning culmination. Despite a run time of almost 2.40 hours, Bhansali also sees to it that the writing is taut, the pacing is just right and at no point does the screenwriting deviate into unnecessary tracks. (more)

Movie Review
The film is low on war scenes and mainly revolves around the romantic angle. A slight lapse of timeline detailing can be observed when Bajirao gets both Kashibai and Mastani pregnant around the same time even though he is actually shown to have been away for a battle. Also the introduction of an �vintage Skype� facility through mirror reflections seems to funny. (more)

The first half looks fabulous but slightly far-off - like watching an opera from seats high in a theatre's skies - the second half mesmerizes. Post-interval, Bhansali imbues every frame with epic, precise passion. His question - what should religion do? Tear us to bits? Or bring us closer? - frames an end that is frightening, beautiful and powerful. (more)

Bajirao Mastani is for those that think history is boring.
Bhansali gives us a trio of remarkable women in Bajirao Mastani. Besides the admirable Mastani, a magnificent warrior-princess and a courageous lover, the film has Bajirao's aggrieved but dignified wife Kashibai and his widowed mother. Deepika is absolutely outstanding as Mastani, a woman in a man's world, a Muslim in a conservative Chitpavan Brahmin setting, and a mother driven by the power of love. Priyanka has less in terms of footage and hangs around in the backdrop for the most part. But when the drama gets into its stride, she too comes into her own. (more)

Perfection that leaves you cold
Bhansali creates perfect, opulent and disturbingly symmetrical worlds with shimmering diyas or diamonds. He then picks groomed and chiselled people and places them in these settings, resplendent in insanely extravagant clothes, not so much to inhabit and live in them, but to pose with their backs arched. The story is truly engaging, mesmerising and keeps you interested till the end. Those who know a bit of the Maratha history or have read this book already, they would love to watch this visual treat, thanks to its gorgeous frames and the way its lead actors breathe life into their characters. The story is old and you may find some references from Mughal-E-Azam and Jodhaa Akbar but it truly captivating to enter into Sanjay Leela Bhansali�s world and re-live this era.(more)
