VAANAM

Critics Review

Engaging.

Silambarasan has understood both the comedic and dramatic possibilities, and played the role well. Santhanam, though, with his timely one-liners, easily carries half the load and walks way with plenty of applause, while VTV Ganesh too contributes his bit. The production values are, naturally, excellent. Krish's story has a lot of plus, and some good performances going for it. If you ignore the minor lapses, you've got a reasonably engaging story, and a moving climax.(more)

Not the regular Simbu kind of syrupy romance.

A multi-track screenplay that has five pivots running parallel, a protagonist who projects the angst and foibles of an ambitious youngster and a culmination on unexpected lines make Vaanam watchable. Krish seems to have cut and pasted a few scenes from the Telugu original — they give a dubbed-film feel to Vaanam. Pithy, poignant, funny and serious as the situation warrants, dialogue (Gnanagiri) is a highpoint of Vaanam. Climax is another.(more)

Vaanam is worth investing on a movie ticket.

The film works due to Krish's story and outstanding camerawork by Nirav Shah. Antony's editing makes the narration crisp especially the way he criss-crosses between the parallel stories. Music of Yuvan is just ok, but it is the background score which keeps you hooked to the narration. Silambarasan delivers an incredible performance and his versatility comes to forte. He is complemented perfectly by Santhanam and VTV Ganesh who brings the house down. Anushka is outstanding.(more)

Stitched well.

'Vaanam', inspired by Tollywood's 'Vedham', is on the dot, courtesy director Krish's narration and versatile performance of lead players, especially Silambarasan. 'Vaanam' is a novel attempt in Tamil cinema and Krish pulls it off well, thanks to a beautifully conceived script and well-written characters.Yuvan Shankar Raja's songs are good. He scores well in background score, while Anthoy's scissors does its best to ensure momentum. Thanks to Nirav Shah who has canned every story in different light tones.(more)

An intelligent fare with substance.

The refreshing factor about Vaanam is, it has eschewed the standard DNA of commercial flicks and Krish's authority on the narrative comes to the fore with this delectably mounted product that tugs at your heart strings. All the artists have performed well and have equal screen presence. Nirav Shah's cinematography is appreciable and the angles and lighting sensibilities up the production value of the film. With his tight frame composition, Editor Anthony is impressive.(more)

What an entertainer!

Vaanam's first half brings you to this edge of the seat situation. Director Krish hasn't just got a new name in Kollywood, but had earned a velvet seat too. The story, screenplay and appealing editing are bolted tight, with not the slightest of space for flaws. (more)
