Darling Review  - Just about enough laughs

Bharath Vijayakumar

Just like romcom it seems we seriously need to name this genre that combines horror and comedy. The recent past has seen so many films of this type and Darling is the latest to join the bandwagon. It is really going to be difficult for any maker to a horror flick that is going to scare the hell out of you, given how much of a ride ghosts have been taken for in this recent trend.

Plot:

A rather interesting plot about a group of youngsters who plan to commit suicide but are not let off easily by fate and a ghost!!!

Cast:

G.V.Prakash is adequate and most importantly never looks out of place. Karunas makes a delightful comeback and Bala Saravanan is good too. The loudest cheers are however reserved for the five minute appearance of Rajendran as Ghost Gopal Varma with 'Thuppakki' BGM playing for his arrival on screen. The entire cast do a good job including Nikki Galrani who made her debut through 1983(Malayalam).

The movie looks sleek despite being a small film. The songs tuned by G. V. Prakash Kumar are definitely pleasant. But they are definitely too many in number for a film that runs just over two hours.Romantic numbers have no place in a film whose primary aim is to scare and make you laugh. One major problem with Darling is the scenes that really click are actually revealed in the trailer. While most of the film is decent fun, the real highlights including Ghost Gopal Varma have already been revealed through these promotions.

You also feel Karunas could have been utilised more. More time is taken to warm up before the actual fun. While this period is nowhere close to being bad, the film might have benefited with more juice in this initial hour.As someone who has not seen the Telugu version (Prema Katha Chithram), one does not know how similar or different is Darling from the original.

Bottomline:

Darling is another small film that does not try to mix too many things and just concentrates on the job at hand. A crisp outing that entertains just about enough.
