Action-romance-chase on the run formula has been done to death in Bollywood. So has been the idea of Sonakshi Sinha featuring in literally every single such film in the last three to four years. So there is nothing original about Tevar; also knowing that it is a remake of the super hit 2003 Telugu flick Okkadu there is hardly anything new to see in the movie.
Yet, Tevar is not bad. Thankfully, Okkadu, despite being in the formulaic zone, had a structure to itself. With Tevar debutant director Amit Sharma retains the entire structure as it, making the film less of a meaningless drag than it could have been otherwise. What also works for the movie is the wonderful chemistry between its leads, and Manoj Bajpayee, but more on that later.
Arjun Kapoor is a Kabbadi player who right before a big match ends up running around with Radha played by Sonakshi, who is the love interest of a local politician. He wants to send her off safely to America while the politician will have none of it. This cat and mouse chase goes on from Agra to Hyderabad and ends up in an all is well love story climax.
Sonakshi is slimmer, calmer, and a teeny weeny bit more focussed, yet one is tired of watching her do the same thing over and over again. One wishes she took more risks having established herself as the masala queen. Arjun frowns, broods and has an occasional goofy smile that is enough for him for now. Manoj Bajpai though is wasted in a thankless role, which he does try his best to make good of and succeeds but one wonders how an actor of his calibre could have reached this low.
The songs in the film are boring, the dance pieces unnecessarily gaudy, the pacing tight and the story crisp. With a mixed bag of things working for it and those not, it is a decent start to the big budget bonanza this year. Catch it if you must, would not harm you.
Rating: 2.5/5
