Happy New Year 'Sharabi' song gets into legal trouble

The Sharabi song from Happy New Year has landed into trouble with RDB music group singer Surj claiming the song is theirs and has been used in the film without his consent.

Sharabi, the end credit track, was incorporated in Happy New Year a few days before the release of the film. The peppy number has vocals by Manj, Nindy Kaur and Vishal-Shekhar. However, only Vishal and Shekhar have been credited for the song.

Manj was a former member of the Punjabi rap band RDB. RDB was comprised of Manj, his brother Surj and another member Kuly (Kuljeet Ral). But the band split after the death of Kuly. The song was originally composed by the brothers when Manj was a part of RDB under the record label Three Records, but for ‘Happy New Year’ Manj recorded the song without giving any credit to his brother. Surj has sent a legal notice to Red Chillies Entertainments alleging that his song has been used without consent.

According to a report in a leading tabloid, the song was sold to Red Chillies with fake documents by former RDB member Manj. When Surj learnt about it, he sent a notice to Red Chillies requesting that the song credit either be attributed to him or not use it at all.
The song Sharabi which was uploaded officially yesterday on Youtube has been removed because of this legal hurdle.
