Ungli Trailer Review - “Middle Finger Rises”
Anup Pandey
A black comedy is something unusual and a first to come from Dharma Productions. Rang De Basanti writer Rensil D’Silva’s second directorial feature Ungli is about a gang of 5 friends - played by Emran Hashmi, Kangana Ranaut, Randeep Hooda, Neil Bhooplama, Angad Bedi- who gives social servants a taste of their own medicine. (In one scene in the trailer, they make policemen literally “eat” cash.)
Ungli trailer is nicely cut. It starts with an engrossing scene about a rickshaw driver refusing a short-distance fare (This will definitely click with every Mumbaikar) and eventually unfolds to tell us what the film is about, and midway enters the “villain”- who is actually a strict cop (played Bollywood action style by Sanjay Dutt). You see, we are already rooting for our corruption-fighting anti-heroes. Well, there’s a heroine too... you can see her in those dash of party song intercuts.
The humour is quirky. And it goes well with the quirky dialogues too- particularly the one about Hindi phrase of ‘ungli’ and ‘ghee’ and the suggestive “beech ka rasta” with a visual reference of middle finger. Surprisingly, they are written by Milap Zaveri who has not-so-good track record with humour (Grand Masti, Housefull). The plot does remind us of Balaji Productions’ 2008 film C Kkompany. However, this definitely has some zing to it!
