5 reasons to watch Mary Kom

Ameet Bhuvan

Priyanka Chopra , the multifaceted talent, is back this week on the silver screen as Mary Kom. Inspired by the story of five times world champion and Olympic winning pugilist Mary Kom, the film is directed by debutant Omang Kumar and produced by the maverick director producer Sanjay Leela Bhansali.

The film’s trailer and songs have created quite a buzz and wetted our curiosity for the film. We tell you five reasons why this film promises to be one of the best films this year. Read on.

1. Priyanka Chopra

Over the years, Priyanka has morphed into this star whose presence alone is reason enough to watch a film. Especially so if it is one of her performance oriented films. After Barfi, we see the lissome lass in another promising role and from the looks of the trailer she has given her all to the part. From real bruises on her pretty face to managing a Manipuri accent, from getting a boxer’s body to singing the song Chaori in the film, she has left no stone unturned. We are sure she will be a delight to watch in the film.

2. Mary Kom

Mary Kom has inspired the nation with her boxing prowess but not many know of her story of amazing grit and perseverance. This film is the chance to take a look into what goes behind making one of our most successful female sports champion. Mary Kom’s story deserves a telling and hence this film will be worth the watch.

3. Sports theme

After Bhaag Milkha Bhaag and Chak De India, sports as a genre in Hindi cinema has found a new lease of life. Both these films were entertaining and inspiring, bringing the sport and the sportsman into national discourse. Mary Kom the film looks equally interesting and promising.

4. Bhansali Productions

Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s name is synonymous with something grand, different and interesting. With Rowdy Rathore he turned producer and proved that even as the money bag, he represents quality and entertainment in his films. Mary Kom looks like a fine product refined by his acumen and eye for detail. That is reason enough for us to instil faith in the debutant director Omung Kumar’s mega venture.

5. The north east

How many mainstream Hindi films are set in the seven sisters in the north east? Yes, none. So when a film this big is based on a phenomenon from the east, our interest levels are piqued. Mary Kom promises to be a great chance to get a peek into the lives and climes of Manipur for the rest of India. It is bringing this often forgotten part of India into the mainstream with its beauty and culture in tow.
