Sathuranga Vettai Review - Mind Games

Sathuranga Vettai - Mind Games
Bharath Vijayakumar

A debutant director, a relatively new crew and mostly unknown faces in the star cast. Yet Sathuranga Vettai did catch attention of at least a section of the audience thanks to the interestingly conceived teasers with sharp dialogues. The stakes grew higher with Lingusamy's Thirupathi Brothers coming into the picture. Does this hunt pack a punch?

Plot:

The film tracks the events in the life of a conman. Harsh experiences in childhood drive Gandhi Babu (Natraj) to believe that 'Money is ultimate' and nothing is wrong if you tune your conscience accordingly. After taking innumerable for a ride he suddenly finds himself at the receiving end once. Will this change his approach towards life or will money continue to be his driving force is what Sathuranga Vettai is about.

Cast:

Natraj as Gandhi Babu is perfectly cast. With a deadpan expression even in the most precarious situation he is a riot. It takes a while to get accustomed to Ishara Nair as the leading lady. But she does bowl you over with her innocent portrayal and towards the later half you realize that she is most apt for the given role. Apart from Ilavarasu and Ponvannan the rest of the cast features either new faces or lesser known artists. The villain who brutally assaults people and speaks chaste tamil is another creative characterisation.

Crew:

The technical crew has done a neat job in giving the film a realistic look. There is a shade  of darkness on screen throughout giving us a feel of the mindset of the characters. Sean Roldan's background score is on the mark.

Direction :

Debutant director Vinoth has provided something very different from what we are accustomed to Friday after Friday. The premise and treatment is vastly different from anything that we have seen recently. The first frame that actually is a zoom on the television screen, the use of animation to crisply narrate the flashback and the narrative style in the form of episodes are pleasant surprises. The realization that dawns into Natraj is not rushed and takes place gradually. The dialogues deserve special mention and make so much sense. Starting off with a note that the film is inspired by true events and the relatively unknown cast lends a more authentic feel to the proceedings. Definitely not all the songs were required. When you are bold enough to do away with so many cliches why this indulgence with the songs alone? Once the film is over and you think of the one liner it is actually something that you have definitely seen before. But the success of Vinoth lies in his presentation and this youngster  is definitely  a talent to watch out far.

Bottomline:

This hunt is a new experience at the cinemas and a promising debut from Vinoth.
