Bobby Jasoos Review : A Family Drama

Anant Vernekar

When you watch Bobby Jasoos, it is important to adjust your expectations so you won't feel let down. If from the trailers you assume that this is a comedy movie or a thriller, it is not so. The movie is a family drama from a locality Moghulpura in Hyderabad.  The conclusion finally is akin to a Saas Bahu TV serial hence keep a few tissues handy.  The movie which fools you all the while of a promising suspense ends up as a mere family reunion.

Plot

Bobby (Vidya Balan) is the eldest daughter in the family who is inspired by detective serials viz. CID and the like and aspires to be a famous detective one day. All her attempts to get a job as a detective falls flat for reasons being – poor English, no professional qualifications to be a detective and inability to carry out screening of clients before taking up an assignment.

Her deficiencies as a detective are utilized by one Aneez Khan (Kiran Kumar), who gives her the task of finding missing people and offering a huge amount in return. Without any questions, the assignment is taken and job done with a bit of hard work.  This is followed by another assignment and then the third with the remuneration increasing multifold.  It is only during the third assignment that she doubts the intentions of Aneez Khan and decides to spy on him which takes you into the second half of the movie.

Cast

The movie is well directed and edited with praiseworthy performances from all actors. Vidya Balan steals the show. Tassawur Sheikh (Ali Fazal) plays the role of a well known personality from a TV program - Alert India. He is one of Bobby’s client who later becomes her fiance.  Supriya Pathak as Bobby’s mom, Tanvi Azmi as her Aunt and Rajendra Gupta as Bobby’s father have pulled out a fabulous performance.

Direction

Samar Shaikh as the director has done a good job but is not assisted by a taut plot. The movie does have comical moments in bits and does not bore you but expecting too much of a thrill and suspense from the title may disappoint you.  There are only a few songs – not memorable, but inserted in the right places and superbly shot.

Bobby Jasoos may not be a must watch for all audience.
