The final rites of veteran filmmaker, actor and screenwriter K Bhagyaraj are taking place on Sunday with state honours, as ordained by Chief Minister Joseph Vijay, who paid his respects to the late director on Saturday.

Videos from the ceremony showed actor Sarath Kumar and actor-director Parthiban — a former assistant of Bhagyaraj — carrying the mortal remains, with an emotional Shanthnu Bhagyaraj, sister Sharanya and mother Poornima seen alongside.

Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan, Mammootty, Dhanush and many others from the industry had visited his Nungambakkam residence on Saturday to pay their final respects. Bhagyaraj reportedly complained of chest pain after his morning jog before suffering a cardiac arrest on the way to the hospital. He was 73.
