Vaa Vaathiyaar starring Karthi in the lead a Tamil language action comedy produced by the actor's second cousin KE Gnanavel Raja of Studio Green Productions. The movie has already been postponed twice from scheduled releases on December 5, 2025 and December 12, 2025.
The U/A censored Vaa Vaathiyaar with a runtime of 129.03 minutes [2 hours 9 minutes 3 seconds] was recently back in the news as a potential Pongal 2026 release, after one of the scheduled Pongal movies Jana Nayagan got postponed. However the release of Vaa Vaathiyaar has now run into a major legal hurdle, with the Madras High Court directing an official assignee of the film to publicly auction the film’s rights to recover unpaid dues from the movie’s producer.
The direction came during a January 9, 2026 hearing of a long-running financial dispute between Studio Green Films' K.E. Gnanavel Raja, and businessman Arjunlal Sunderdas. An official assignee of the Madras High Court—tasked with identifying and recovering assets—approaches the High Court ahead of Studio Green’s films releases, ensuring time to time repayments of the money owed by Studio Green to Arjunlal.
As of December 2025, the total outstanding amount, including interest, is Rs. 21.78 Cr. which has prevented Vaa Vaathiyaar from releasing till date. In an effort to secure Vaa Vaathiyaar’s release, Studio Green moved the Madras High Court seeking modification of a December 2025 divisions court order, which prohibited the release of Vaa Vaathiyaar until the entire Rs. 21.78 Cr. amount was cleared.
However, during the latest hearing on Friday, the Madras High Court chose a tougher route, instructing the official assignee to auction the film’s rights to recover the dues. With this direction in place, Vaa Vaathiyaar’s release now depends on the outcome of the auction, and settlement process.
