Top 10 Disappointing Tamil Movies of 2013

The top 10 disappointing movies were selected based on the deviation between the high level of expectations prior to release and the audience response post-release. This is one list that there is no points for making it to top of the list. The movies that made it to higher up in the list are relatively more disappointing than the ones in the bottom of the list.

Big Director's Struggle to Adapt

2014 saw big directors struggling to adapt to the new age of film-making. Mani Ratnam's Kadal was unanimously rejected even the director's technical wizardry and AR Rahman's musical score could not salvage the movie. Selva Raghavan continues to lose money for his producers through his poorly executed and big budget Irandam Ulagam. Aadhibhagavan proved again how distraction takes a toll on directors creativity as Ameer's lost his focus becoming hero, entangled in politics and controversies. Another veteran Barathiraja's Annakodi comeback movie could not even sustain the opening weekend at the box office.

Actors' miss the mark in selection of right scripts

Karthi's callous choice of scripts in the form of Alex Pandian and Azhaguraja were ruthlessly punished by critics and fans. Dhanush had a mixed year consisting of dream debut in Hindi, superlative acting performance in Mariyaan and shockingly poor production value in Naiyyandi. Bilingual David did more damage to Vikram's hero image as his characterization was made a caricature. Sasikumar's mindless Kutti Puli was criticized and yet managed to do average business at the box office. Vijay's Thalaivaa was unapologetically unoriginal as the director took scenes from dozens of movies including Sarkar, Nayagan, Devar Magan, Indra and countless other Godfather based movies.

It is understood that nobody sets out to make a bad movie. Almost every movie is made with the best of intentions. The outcome is determined during the execution of the vision. We wish the director, cast and creative crew members better luck in 2014.
