Good Bad Ugly Preview - SWOT Analysis of Ajith Kumar's latest

PUBLISHED DATE | 09/Apr/2025

Following the luke-warm response Vidaamuyarchi received with the theater audience this year, Tamil star actor Ajith Kumar is gearing up for his second release of 2025, Good Bad Ugly. Good Bad Ugly releases in cinemas tomorrow, and here is a SWOT Analysis of the movie:

Strengths:

  • Good Bad Ugly is written and directed by Aadhik Ravichandran, whose last movie Mark Antony (2023) was Kollywood's biggest box-office redemption, despite rating extremely low with the critics. Good Bad Ugly being Aadhik's maiden collaboration with Ajith, thus bringing a fresh director-actor synergy, and Aadhik being a self-admitted hard-core fan of Ajith Kumar are bonus adds to this particular strength.

  • After Thunivu (2023), Ajith is back playing the grey-shaded protagonist in Good Bad Ugly. If movies like Mankatha (2011), Vedalam (2015), and Thunivu (2023) are anything to go by, then Ajith's audience like watching him in this type of negative roles.

  • Very little is known so far about Good Bad Ugly's plot, and this has certainly raised curiosity about the movie even among Ajith fans. All that is known is Ajith plays an ex-convict in Good Bad Ugly, who is drawn into his violent ways after his son (played by actor Karthikeya Dev) gets kidnapped in the movie.

  • With a runtime of 2 hours 19 minutes and 52 seconds—First half: 1 hour 4 minutes 36 seconds and second half: 1 hour 15 minutes 16 secondsGood Bad Ugly is the crispest A-lister movie to come out of Tamil cinema in recent times.

Weakness:

  • Unlike Thunivu or Vidaamuyarchi, which made a stamp with its music, Good Bad Ugly's performance so far with GV Prakash Kumar's music, has been average at best.

  • Good Bad Ugly's trailer was more a mash-up of Ajith's past movie references, than about the film in itself. Director Aadhik Ravichandran has however stated that this gamble  of a move was made in order to not raise expectations about the film.

Opportunities

  • Good Bad Ugly once again reunites Ajith and Trisha after Vidaamuyarchi. This presents an opportunity for the beloved on screen pairing to hit the bulls eye with their chemistry, a mark grossly missed in their previous outing.

  • Good Bad Ugly is a solo release this Tamil New Year weekend. An opportunity to set box-office records with little to no competition.

Threats:

  • 65+ Tamil movies have seen theatrical releases in 2025 so far, yet not even five have been able to make a box-office impact in proportion to their respective budgets. Content too has been a consistent misfire this year, and it remains to be seen if Good Bad Ugly proves an exception to these now-regular Kollywood threats.

  • Aadhik Ravichandran's movies have either been a box-office hit or a complete miss. Notably, the filmmaker had two consequent failures to his repertoire, before Mark Antony in 2023.

A Mythri Movie Makers production, Good Bad Ugly also stars Prabhu, Arjun Das, Prasanna, Telugu actor Sunil, singer Usha Uthup, Rahul Dev, Redin Kingsley, Raghu Ram, Yogi Babu. Priya Prakash Varrier, Sayaji Shinde, Jackie Shroff, Shine Tom Chacko, Darkkey Nagaraja, and Simran in a cameo appearance.
