L2 Empuraan's politics rattles the right, fires up the left!

L2: Empuraan written by actor Murali Gopy, directed by actor Prithviraj Sukumaran, and starring 'Lalettan' Mohanlal in the lead released in theaters worldwide on March 27, 2025. L2E, as the film is also known released in Malayalam, Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, and Kannada languages , and slowly but surely is starting to come under the scanner of all corners of the world.

In India, L2E was hailed as an extremely stylish production on one hand, while on the other it is being accused of being 'left-centric'. L2E is the second film in a three-installment series of movies, and its predecessor Lucifer (2019) had established Mohanlal as Stephen Nedumpally, an adopted child of Kerala's Chief Minister. Stephen's other identity is Khureshi Ab'ram, who is interpol's most wanted alongside his trusted aide Zayed Masood, played by Prithviraj Sukumaran.

[SPOILERS AHEAD] In L2E, a young Zayed Masood is shown as the only survivor of the anti-Muslim violence that erupted throughout India during the 2002 Gujarat riots. Stephen on the other hand is a Christian due to his early years being brought up in a Church. Together they are pitted against an extreme political force, that happens to be Hindu. [END OF SPOILERS]

In a nut-shell, L2E hat-tips several real life political scenarios in India. Indian movies depicting tragic incidents, or alluding to an ongoing political scenarios is not out of the ordinary, and L2E doing it, as the second film in a political thriller series seems expected as well.

Nevertheless, L2: Empuraan has discomforted 'the right' with its 'left-wing politics', going by the posts on X. Currently, a very small but staunch section is voicing out its dismay with Empuraan because of the movie's on-screen secularism, and its pot-shots at extremism. Keralites on the other hand, are hailing Empuraan as their much needed saviour.

A joint production venture of Aashirvad Cinemas, Sree Gokulam Movies, and Lyca Productions, L2E also stars Manju Warrier, Tovino Thomas, Abhimanyu Singh, Suraj Venjaramoodu, Indrajith Sukumaran, among others.
