Rich yet Lack substance

Following the events of Lucifer, this mid-piece of the trilogy focuses on Mohanlals true identity Khureshi Abram. How his KA cartel deals against drug mafia and the happenings after his brother goes rogue with respect to the local Kerala politics forms the rest. (more)

Empuraan doesn't quite match the punch of Lucifer

It is definitely interesting to see director Prithviraj mount a Malayalam film that travels from Africa to the MI6 HQ in London to the Middle East. It definitely lifts the bar for our filmmakers. And it is a believable story, not just one that takes the hero on audacious missions that leave us shaking our heads and laughing. So, this could make for an entertaining, rousing viewing for audiences, with the promise of another installment.(more)

Return Of The King

The film never topped that movement for its sheer anticipation and payoff. Everything else seemed secondary and incidental in service of that one cinematic moment of pure satisfying image making.(more)

Convenient writing aside, Mohanlal-Prithviraj actioner delivers

Empuraan is technically sound. Be it the forest fight sequence or the Jathin-Khureshi confrontation scene, cinematography by Sujith Vaassudev help elevate the film. The lighting, in particular, was spectacular in many elevation sequences. Deepak Dev's music, especially the Empuraan song, added to the hype. Overall, Empuraan is a satisfying sequel with much to look forward to in Part 3.(more)

Mohanlal, rich production design fail to save this sequel

In Empuraan, all these weaknesses get exposed as the writer fails to create any memorable exchange or scenario even for Mohanlal whom the film literally worships. The man does not face a worthy adversary or a conflict which challenges him. Manju Warrier is thankfully not relegated to the background as women are in such star vehicles. Except for an action sequence set in a forest, most of the others set-pieces, especially the climactic one, are passable.(more)

High on style, low on substance

L2: Empuraan has stunning visuals and a few elevations, but it lacks the depth and gripping storytelling that made the prequel Lucifer a success. Mohanlals presence is a highlight, but the slow pace, underdeveloped characters, and lengthy runtime weigh the film down. Unless you are a die-hard Mohanlal fan, the experience may not fully satisfy you. If you choose to watch it, keep your expectations in check.(more)
