L2: Empuraan, also known as L2E is a Malayalam language political action thriller, that comes as a follow-up to the Mohanal starrer Lucifer (2019). Second part of a planned trilogy, Empuraan is written by actor Murali Gopy, directed by actor Prithviraj Sukumaran, and lead act by veteran star Mohanlal. 

5 reasons to watch Empuraan in theaters this March 27, 2025:

1. Plot:

 L2E is the second film in a political universe, where Mohanlal plays an upcoming Kerala politician named Stephen Nedumpally, who also leads a double life as an Internationally wanted trade criminal named Khureshi Ab'ram. 

 Empuraan which translates to overlord (more than a king less than a god), is set 5 years after the first film Lucifer, and is set in the aftermath of the US return Jathin (Tovino Thomas) taking over as the new Kerala Chief Minister, with the support of his biological sister Priyadarshini Ramdas (Manju Warrier) and adoptive brother Stephen (Mohanlal). 

Prithviraj Sukumaran plays Stephen's right hand Zayed Massood in this story, and plotlines like how Stephen is connected to the Chief Minister's family, his rise in ranks as an the most wanted of the interpol, his connection to Zayed are expected to unfold in L2: Empuraan. 

2. Cast:

Murali Gopy and Prithviraj Sukumaran's universe comes with a big ensemble of familiar faces. Mohanlal's lead act alongside Tovino, Manju, Prithvi, Indrajith Sukumaran, Suraj Venajaramoodu, Sshivada, and Bollywood actor Abhimanyu Singh promises a packed performance on screen.

3. Sequel Segue: 

While promoting the release of L2: Empuraan, film's director Prithviraj Sukumaran told the media, “When I made the first film, I ensured it had a self-contained story with a proper conclusion. However, with ‘Empuraan’, I have taken a different approach as a filmmaker. This movie will require a third installment for complete closure. Right now, the story for ‘Empuraan 3’ is in its early stages”. Mohanlal has additionally revealed that L2E comes with the segue to the third movie. 

4. Technical Team

Lucifer (2019) is the sixth highest grossing film of Malayalam cinema, and was even remade in Telugu as Godfather (2022). Besides Mohanlal, the success of the first movie is majorly attributed to factors like the writing (Murali Gopy), music (Deepak Dev), direction (Prithviraj Sukumaran), quality production (Antony Perumbavoor - Aashirvad Cinemas) among others. L2E comes with the same set of technical team.  

5. PAN Indian appeal

Despite being a Malayalam film, L2 Empuraan is seeing a wide release in languages like Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, and Kannada. The film's interesting plotline along with its accessibility in multiple languages, makes it worth a shot for the theater audience.
