L2: Empuraan starring Mohanlal, Prithviraj Sukumaran, Manju Warrier, Tovino Thomas among others releases in theaters on March 27, 2025. The Malayalam language political drama comes as a direct sequel to Lucifer (2019), which is written by Murali Gopy and directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran.
Empuraan is set five years after the first movie, and comes with the same cast and crew. Ahead of L2: Empuraan's release, it has been officially confirmed that the movie has garnered close to Rs. 60 Cr. in worldwide advance sales. L2E—as the film is also known—has been made on a budget range between Rs. 140 Cr (number quoted by Prithviraj Sukumaran) to Rs. 180 Cr. (number quoted by Sree Gokulam Movies).
Despite what the actual bugdet of the movie is, Empuraan makers seem satisfied with the Rs. 60 Cr. opening, and Prithviraj Sukumaran told the press, “I just got off a call with the producer, and he informed me that ‘L2: Empuraan’ has already collected Rs 60 crore worldwide. We were always confident about the film’s reception, but this response has exceeded our expectations. We are humbled and hope to meet the audience’s high expectations,”
The L2E actor-director also acknowledged that 2025 has been a lukewarm year for Malayalam cinema, box office wise. Prithviraj Sukumaran is hopeful that L2: Empuraan will bring a much-needed boost to the industry, considering no other Malayalam film besides Officer on Duty (February 2025) and Rekhachithram (January 2025) has managed to impress the audience this year.
