Thangalaan starring actor Vikram in the lead is an upcoming period action drama that is all set to release in theaters on August 15, 2024 i.e. Independence Day in India. The movie written and directed by Pa. Ranjith is a production venture of Studio Green Productions, Neelam Productions and Jio Studios, and revolves around the titular tribal leader, who goes on a valiant struggle against the British colonizers, after they plot to seize his land for gold mining.

Given the subject of Thangalaan, and Pa. Ranjith's style of filmmaking which leans towards 'realism', there was a widespread buzz that Thangalaan is an art film aimed at a niche audience, rather than the mass audience. However this has been denied by the makers, and G. Dhananjayan who works closely with Studio Green has said in interviews,
"Thangalaan is a period film, not a contemporary movie. It is based on real life events that took place between the end of 18th century to the beginning of 19th century with KGF (Kolar Gold Fields) as the backdrop. Thangalaan will come out as a typical iconic film that combines realism, action, and many other mass factors."
