Asvins - Not for the faint-hearted and rational-minded

Meera Chithirappavai

Asvins, featuring Vasanth Ravi in the lead role, is a fascinating concoction of mythological elements intertwined with horror and psychology. The film embraces chaos as its defining style, seeking solace in the realms of abnormality and darkness.

At its core, Asvins delves into the stark dichotomies of good and evil, darkness and light, humanity and demons, and blessings and curses. Paradoxically, director Tarun Teja manages to create an experience that is both astonishing and average simultaneously.

While the film adheres to the conventional setup, it excels in its ability to deliver unexpected jump scares. However, as the story attempts to navigate the realms of philosophy and psychology, it teeters on the brink of confusion and incoherence.

The writer struggles to keep the story clear and concise. In their eagerness to include everything, the film overwhelms the audience with an abundance of information, crossing into a zone of "TMI" (Too much information). However, this challenge is common for storytellers who attempt to construct a grand narrative comparable to a lengthy 500-page novel.

The film attempts seamlessly integrate the mythological aspects into its narrative, but it falls short of providing the desired depth and substance.

The technical craftsmanship exhibited in the film is truly brilliant. Within this genre, the success of a movie hinges upon the creative minds orchestrating the magic behind the camera, the edits, and the soundscape. Thankfully, Edwin Sakay, Venkat Rajen, and Harish have executed their roles with precision, leaving no room for disappointment.

Vasanth Ravi, an actor who continually makes a resounding impact in the industry, establishes his presence once again. With a distinctive style that ensnares the viewer's undivided attention, he proves his mettle with every film he undertakes. Asvins will undoubtedly hold a pivotal place in his filmography, serving as a benchmark for future actors seeking to emulate his nuanced performance.

Apart from the setback the film suffered in case of rationalizing all the proceedings of the film, the film accomplishes its vision.
