Actor Vijay's family action drama Varisu and Ajith's heist action entertainer Thunivu clashed one to one last day and here is a comprehensive report on how each of them performed at the box office:

 
Content & Reception

Both the films opened up to a mix of good and average reviews, since they had thier own pros and cons with respect to their content and genre. Nevertheless, Thunivu and Varisu both had enough pull to entertain fans this festive season. While Moviecrow's individual rating is higher for Thunivu, an aggeragate score is higher for Varisu.

   
Domestic Box Office

In Tamil Nadu Thunivu had a clear lead over Varisu. As reported earlier, Thunivu had an upper hand with the number of screens and show times compared to Varisu, but still sold to housefull shows even with all the extra screens. 

Day 1 Tamil Nadu BO Gross (Approx)

• Thunivu - Rs. 23 Cr.
• Varisu - Rs. 21.5 Cr. 

In other territories like Kerala, Karnataka and North India Varisu had a clear lead over Thunivu. However Thunivu has done well in these markets, which is quite encouraging for Ajith; His previous movies had only witnessed lukewarm responses earlier there. 

In Andhra Pradesh/Telengana, Ajith's Thunivu enjoyed a solo release and grossed a decent collection. The Telugu version of Varisu is scheduled for January 14, 2023 release. With already a momentum missed we have to wait and see if this move of alternate day release will help a dubbed film there. 

Overseas Territories

Despite last minute release change, Varisu has super lead over Thunivu in overseas regions. However the collections are not on par with what usual Vijay starrers could pull.  The makers missed opportunities with plans that were changed multiple times.

In territories like the UK, Australia, Malaysia, Varisu has a strong hold. In USA though, Varisu started with a lower premiere day gross than Thunivu but the day 1 collections for Varisu is higher than Thunivu in the region. 

 
Final Word: With encouraging word-of-mouth, both the films have potential to bring a big revenue in overall run. For now worldwide collections (combining domestic and overseas) Varisu, has a lead over Thunivu. The real test will be during the weekend.
