Ya Yaa Review - Mundane Comedy
By Bharath Vijayakumar
Comedy is seen as the safest bet today. Almost every month there seems to be a movie to cash in on the eagerness of the audience to forget their stress. The latest to join this rat race is Ya Ya that features the promising combo of Shiva - Santhanam.
Plot:
Well this is almost absent and we have it as an excuse to fill the running time. It is on the lines of OKOK with two friends who are eager to play spoilsport on the love life of each other.
Cast:
Though Shiva and Santhanam do have some funny one liners to their credit the combo does fail to deliver to their potential. And the trouble here is that they seem to be hardly interested and sleepwalk through the roles. Though the template is similar to movies that each of them might have done before, the bonding or chemistry that is required for these type of movies to click is seen nowhere. It is time Shiva does a rethinking of his strategy. His poker faced comedy is fine for the humorous scenes but when he is supposed to be serious we atleast expect some sort of reactions from him. The leading ladies Dhansika and Sandhya do not have much to do. It is sad to see Dhansika in such an insipid role after "Aravaan" and "Paradesi". Powerstar's role is more than a cameo with an almost five minute spoof where he imitates Rajni,Kamal,Vijay,Ajith and Surya.
Analysis:
The songs are pedestrian. The "Oru Kannadiya" song is the pick of the lot. The other songs that pop up out of nowhere only drive us to exasperation with their unimaginative picturisation. Shiva walking and doing some antics in the name of dance worked in Thamizh Padam as it was a spoof. That he continues to do the same in all his movies beats any sort of reasoning. .
The movie actually never gets going. A few laughter here and there and the rest of the time you are anxiously waiting for genuinely funny moments. Looks like the makers were too lazy and assumed audience will laugh at anything sold in the name of humour. The least they could have done is find a suitable title for the film. The movie has many scenes that have the audience actually saying the exact antonym of the title!!! Director I.Rajasekharan should have laid more emphasis on creating funny situations. But he has merely relied on few one liners and scenes that border on parody to do the trick. There have been few successful movies in the recent past which followed this template. But for such ventures to click you either need to have atleast a few laugh out loud moments or at the minimum keep the pace of the movie reasonably good. Sadly Ya Ya is devoid of both.
Bottomline:
Ya Ya is another proof that comedy is serious business and never to be taken for granted. People who laugh at the drop of a hat may find Ya Ya amusing..
