One of Tamil cinema's popular film families is veteran Gangai Amaren's whose sons are actor-director=producer Venkat Prabhu and actor-music composer Premgi Amaren. Gangai Amaren's wife Manimegalai passed away last night (11:10 PM) at Kauvery hospital, Chennai where she was being treated for a 'brief illness'.

Tributes and messages of condolences have been pouring in for the family since Monday morning. Gangai Amaren stareted his career as a lyricist, often writing for his brother Ilayaraja's compostions. He then branched out to composing music, singing writing and directing and his son Premgi Amaren shares a similar career trajectory.
