Irandam Kuththu Review - An Orgy of Boredom!

Irandaam Kuththu - An Orgy of Boredom!

Bharath Vijayakumar

Sex sells. But in case you are wondering if in this day and age of the internet era, with a whole lot of options, would a mainstream film garner attention just because of its steamy content - the answer in short is a 'Yes'. I too was wondering the same as I was just done with Irandaam Kuththu but the timeline of my Twitter feed showed up the top ten globally viewed content in Netflix this year. Guess what, it had both 365 days (a Polish erotic drama) and Dark Desire (a Mexican erotic thriller). I had watched the first one and parts of the second one (don't ask me which parts) and make no mistake, the only reason they were in the top ten list is their explicit content.

But Irandaam Kuththu is one of those films that is further proof that you need atleast a semblance of effort to go into the thought process and execution, even if you are relying on sex and crude language to see your film through. Sex comedy is a genre and it is supposed to be naughty or dirty (for want of a better word) and that isn't an issue. Finesse maybe too much to expect from this film but for a sex comedy the least that is expected is something to laugh about or laugh at. But the maximum that this film can do is to refer to body parts with names of fruits and vegetables. This isn't comedy. You at least need to build a joke around this word play (again word play is too generous a term for what is on display). A married guy using condoms as gloves and a facemask is the film's idea of what is supposed to be funny. This is an adult film with a juvenile thought process.

Okay, so this is the plot even if you are not interested to know. As a couple are involved in lovemaking, their bed catches fire. But they are caught up in the passion of their own heat that they do not realize any other heat around them. They are engulfed in the flames and now the spirit of the girl is looking for a male partner to fulfill her unfinished game of passion. And this spirit is quite a choosy one. She wants only a virgin male for this. Now the two male leads along with their wives get trapped in this haunted house. As seriously as I try to phrase the plot, this film is one mindless mess. Not expecting political correctness or proper representation of the queer community but the least we expect is some fun in the form of a chuckle or two. Here is how a scene in the film goes. The heroine is a VJ and she asks the public to name an English word that starts with 'F' and ends with 'UCK'. Of course you know that the answer isn't going to be the obvious. But how on earth did they think of FIRETRUCK to be the alternative! Bowled over by the VJ's brilliance , the mother of the hero decides that she would be her daughter-in- law after watching this show on TV. I was like, what the FIRETRUCK!

The actors are all clueless. Atleast the first part was better on this count. The Ravi Maria 'Thambi' song in the form of a soliloquy is one zany bit that works a little. It is basically only this much of imagination that one hopes to see in these kind of films.

Bottomline :

Adult comedy is a genre and requires the same amount of respect and effort that any other genre would but the Irandaam Kuththu team couldn't care less. Yes, sex sells. But Irandaam Kuththu is proof that when not done right, sex can be boring and tasteless as well!

Verdict: 1/5
