2020 was a hard year for everyone and Tamil movie buffs were no exceptions. Luckily, they have at least 12 films that are complete to almost complete, to look forward to in 2021.
It is worth mentioning here that there have been no updates on biggies like Shankar directed Indian 2 (starring Kamal Haasan) and Mani Ratnam's Ponniyin Selvan. Hence it is unclear if they are indeed planning on a 2021 release.
Tamil Movies anticipated in 2021
12. Maanaadu
Director Venkat Prabhu has not had a note-worthy release in the last 5 years and the movie is sort of a comeback for him. Simbu who will be seen in a fit form in the movie also turned a lot of heads with the first look poster. To top it all, Maanaadu is a political thriller that will be releasing in the year Tamil Nadu will host its due assembly elections.

The producer-actor combo that gave Tamil audience action-thrillers like Theeran Adhigaram Ondru and Kaithi are coming in 2021 with this movie. Bakkiyaraj Kannan has directed this film with Karthi and Rashmika in the lead.
8. Eeswaran
Simbu lost a lot of weight and revived his physique for this movie, which was also possibly the quickest film of his career. The movie is directed by Suseenthiran and is touted to be a commercial entertainer.
7. Jagame Thandhiram
Director Karthik Subbaraj is expected to weave his magic again with this Dhanush starrer gangster-thriller. The movie has been rumoured several times this year to release on OTT but the makers have stuck to their 'only theater release' policy.
6. Sarpatta
The name Pa. Ranjith brings in a significant amount of content expectation and the same is expected to be fulfilled in this sports based period drama. Arya's ripped physique in the first look poster and the actor showing the movie to Kamal Haasan ahead of release has generated quite the buzz around movie's release.
5. Karnan
Expected to be yet another brilliant light on social injustice of true-life events, Karnan starring Dhanush and directed by Mari Selvaraj ranks high up in the list of anticipated movies.
4. Cobra
A film that promises fodder for Vikram's acting prowess, Cobra will feature the actor in yet another set of multiple get-ups. The film's overseas plans may have been cut-short due to the pandemic but the team has been diligently shooting ever since it was allowed locally. Another highly anticipated movie in Tamil.
3. Valimai
2020 was a disappointing year for Ajith fans who went to the extent of printing a poster for the film's producer to ask for updates about the film. On top of that Ajith injured himself twice during shooting.
However the actor seems keen on completing the film at the earliest possible and a 2021 release is not a far-stretch for the movie.
2. Annaatthe
Rajinikanth will be making his political debut in 2021 so people expect a precursor to his stint in politics with this film. However the film has been marketed only as a 'family entertainer' and plans on releasing by Tamil new year.
1. Master
Tamil film industry's most anticipated film starring Vijay in the lead is expected to do full justice only via a theatrical release. It wouldn't be a stretch to say that even at 50% audience capacity (the limit allowed during COVID-19 regulations), the movie could end up reviving the theater business. However, the makers have not taken a firm decision as yet on the release date or type, which leaves a lingering of anxiousness around the movie.
