Actor Dhanush and production house Sun Pictures had officially announced their collaboration back in December 2019 and since then it has been buzzed that Mithran Jawahar who has worked with Dhanush in the films Yaradi Nee Mohini (2008), Kutty (2010), and Uthama Puthiran (2010) will be directing the film.

It was also buzzed that Dhanush has penned the script for this one and actress Hansika Motwani was in consideration for playing female lead. However no official announcements on the cast and crew followed.

Now, it is being said that composer Anirudh who started his career with the Dhanush starrer 3 (2011) and has given hit musical albums with the actor such as Ethir Neechal (Dhanush's production), Velaiyilla Pattathari (2014), Maari (2015) and Thanga Magan (2015) will be composing music for D44. An official confirmation on the same awaits as well.
