Passable Light Hearted Outing.

A slice of life flick with a neat first hour as the drama is set correctly, but the last hour is mostly tasteless, extends and runs for quite some time even after the core drama is gotten over.(more)

Dhanush, Nithya Menen's rom-com proves that you don't need guns to blow audience's mind

You find yourself rooting for her from the word go. Veteran filmmaker Bharathiraja also brings such a joyful vibe to the film that you cant get enough of him. All these characters feel real because they disregard the preordained duties that are expected of them. When partially paralysed Neelakandan asks his dad whether he has become a burden to the grandfather and son, you dont get any emotional retort from the old man. Instead, he admits that he is a burden, but a good one. The melodrama gets replaced by heartening rationality, which sets apart Thirchitramabalam from many such feel-good films. Theres a lot of heart, and also thought.(more)

Dhanush is effortless, Nithya Menen is phenomenal in endearing slice-of-life drama

Veteran filmmaker Bharathiraja gets a meaty part which he plays incredibly well. Some of the films best scenes involve Dhanush, Nithya and Bharathiraja at their best. Anirudh Ravichanders music is another major highlight of the movie. His work is a heartfelt tribute to the legendary Ilayaraja, and the songs and background score elevate the mood of the movie on so many occasions.(more)

Dhanush, Nithya Menen shine in a heartwarming drama

There are hardly any false notes. Even the airport climax gets a modern spin that makes it agreeable. But the detour to the protagonist's village doesn't really lend anything extra to the story. We get a few more characters who are also nice people, and that's just it. But he makes up for it with the heartwarming climax.(more)

This is a cute, worthy successor to Velai Illa Pattadhaari

The richness of Thiruchitrambalam will surely yield fresh fruits. And Id be happy to watch a sequel that shifts the gaze towards Shobhanas aspirations. Although shes present throughout the film, Jawahar doesnt dive into her psyche. Does she drink beer at her home the way the Pazhams do? I dont know. But I do know that this is a cute and worthy successor to VIP (more)

An ill-advised end derails this mostly heartwarming film

Thiruchitrambalam for how it mostly resists easy temptation to sink into melodrama. Pazham gets rejected by a girl, and where it would be so tempting to launch into the catchy Thenmozhi Poongodi (this films version of Kolaveri Di), it doesnt. Instead, you get the warm scene of Shobana reassuring Pazham of his value, and even in this scene, she quickly moves on and says she was just joking about his worth. The hint of a smile on Pazhams face is enough to tell us he knows whats true and whats not. These are such wonderful, understated portions in this filmand THIS is really why I dont get the sudden turn into ill-advised melodrama towards the end. Its tragic really when a film, on the cusp of excellence, makes a dated choice that ends up leaving a sour aftertaste And so, to end this review, I have no choice but to go back to the beginning. Its rare to see man-woman friendship in our cinema(more)

Dhanush, Nithya Menen & Bharathiraja's fantastic performances make Thiruchitrambalam, an enjoyable feel-good film, that's thoroughly engaging.

The film heavily relies on dialogues to drive the plot forward and it is done efficiently. The transformation of Pazham looks very convenient and contrived but keeps us hooked. Its a well made entertainer that ends our drought for feel good films. Thiruchitrambalam is held together by the unparalleled performances of Dhanush, Nithya Menon, and Bharathiraja. Avoiding the cliches leaves the film in a pedestal though it has its own flaws.(more)
