Rajinikanth is currently shooting for his upcoming film Thalaivar 168 (tentative title) directed by Siruthai Siva. With the news doing the rounds that Superstar will be teaming up with director Lokesh Kanagaraj for his next film (Thalaivar 169) to be produced by Kamal Haasan, the latest report suggests that the project has been firmed up. 

According to reports, Rajinikanth will begin work on this project after wrapping Thalaivar 168 in the second half of the year. While Thalaivar 168 is expected to hit the screens for Diwali 2020, Thalaivar 169 is likely to hit the screens for Pongal 2021. The film will also mark the end of Rajini's acting career before he gets into active politics to contest 2021 assembly polls.

On the other hand, Lokesh Kanagaraj is busy filming Vijay starrer Master which is schedule for release in April 2020. Kamal Haasan will be bankrolling the project under his banner Raaj Kamal Films International. However an official announcement is awaited on the same.
