In the name of April Fools' prank, which is a prank pulled worldwide on the 1st of April every year, some media houses have been on the prowl giving out explosive headlines such Rajini Ties up With BJP and Ajith joins ADMK.
While it is all fun and frolic to see fans go berserk and give out reactions before reading the details in full, it makes one wonder if pranking with a subject like politics, especially with with elections hardly 17 days away in the state of Tamil Nadu, was absolutely necessary.
To the unknown, ever since actor Rajinikanth entered politics, he has been oft tagged as a supporter of BJP and has been mocked and criticized for the same. BJP as a party has never really worked with the Dravidian community of the state and at a time when film-makers from throughout South are appealing to vote BJP out of power, any kind of false news on the on the alliance (even if it was meant to be a prank) has every potential of being screen-shot and spread mindlessly on social media.
This at a time when Rajinikanth himself has decided not to support any political parties could end up causing chaos and mislead communication.
Such headlines also come across as insensitive to an actor like Ajith who has over the years vigorously fought for political parties not mis-using his name or the goodwill he has done over the years (He went as much to dissolve his fan bases for the same and has time and again painfully reiterated his name will never be associated for seeking votes for any particular political party).
Media houses especially those catering to the film industry have always had their share of fun on April Fools' Day (including MovieCrow) but as mindful as we can be, we ought not to forget that we live in a country where citizens express religious disagreement over a 'Surf Excel' ad by leaving hate comments on the Android app 'MS Excel'. Hence a subject like politics must be treated with utmost care.
