What was supposed to be a press meet for South Indian Film Women's Association announcing their support for singer Chinmayi Sripaada and filmmaker Leena Manimekalai and generally all women for their allegations against Vairamuthu, Susi Ganesan, John Vijay, Radha Ravi among others turned out to be a controversial frenzy between the survivors and the press on Saturday.
Chinmayi was even seen folding her hands at one point and begging the reporters to stop asking insensitive questions about the MeToo allegations. The press meet though mostly a revisit of what the survivors had already spoken on social media, also had them address topics like the ones below:
- Lakshmi Ramakrishnan on the purpose of the press meet: “..We have lost confidence that the Tamil film industry will act against the offenders. Hence, we are approaching the media....They are also threatening one or two rare voices of support from the film world. The South Indian Film Women’s Association strongly condemns such actions and expresses solidarity to the survivors...”
- Chinmayi on not filing a case against Vairamuthu yet: "..I’ve not been able to locate my old passport in which the details regarding my trip to Switzerland are stamped. I do not have a clarity on the year, whether it was 2004 or 2005...I can only file the case after I find it. I’ve been discussing this with my lawyers. I will definitely file a case..."
- Leena Mamimekalai on being asked to narrate the details of harassment by Susi Ganesan : "..I have explained everything in my last press meet (held two days ago). It is not fair for you to make me recall everything. This is not a court and I will not be cross questioned like this..." Later Manimekalai was quoted by a media report as saying: “It was insensitive to have asked us to narrate in detail the trauma which we had gone through, It was not a court. The environment was quite intimidating during the press conference.”
