Women power soaring in Kollywood: Ten upcoming films bear testimony to this fact

Tamil cinema has broken the mold of not shedding enough spotlight on its female actors from time to time, but it wasn't until recently that heroine-centric films started taking precedence in terms of critical acclaim, popularity and box-office credentials. While films like Nayagi and Dora were marketed solely on the star value of Trisha and Nayanthara, movies like Taramani and Thiruttu Payalae 2 had heroines who were more popular than their respective heroes and had central characters.

This was followed by a slew of critical and commercial hits like Magalir Mattum (Jyothika), Aramm (Nayanthara), Aruvi (Aditi Balan), Naachiyaar (Jyothika), Nadigaiyar Thilagam (Keethy Suresh), Kolammavu Kokila (Nayanthara) and Imaikaa Nodigal (Nayanthara), where heroines shouldered the main responsibility of carrying the film.

Taking a leaf from all the above mentioned success strategies, 10 more movies that  are in the offing prove that makers are willing to bet on the prowess of a heroine and are not hesitant to use their face value from the posters to the teasers and trailers. Here is a look at these said films:

  • U Turn (Samantha): Samantha will be seen playing a leading news paper intern on the trail of solving a murder mystery. She will be reprising the role of Shraddha Srinath from the Kannada original of the same name.

  • Kanaa (Aishwarya Rajesh): A rural girl from a modest background dreams of becoming an international cricketer and Aishwarya Rajesh promises a convincing show ahead.

  • Kaatrin Mozhi (Jyotika) :  The film is about an ambitious housewife (Jyotika), who becomes a radio jockey for a late-night relationship advice show.

  • Paris Paris (Kajal Aggarwal): Kangana Ranaut and her film Queen were a phenomenon in 2014 and Kajal Aggarwal is all set to repeat history with its Tamil version Paris Paris.

  • Garjanai (Trisha): Bollywood actress Anushka Sharma created quite the buzz with her debut production venture NH 10 in which she also played a distressed modern young woman on the run for life from 'honour-killers' of this society. Trisha is reprising this bold role in Garjanai.

  • KuttraPayirchi (Trisha): Though not much is known about this film, Trisha will be seen sharing screen space with another heroine of substance, Priya Mani in this project. It would be interesting to see what these women offer their audience.

  • Kolayuthir Kaalam (Nayanthara): A remake of an English mystery thriller called Hush, Kolayuthir Kaalam will see Nayanthara playing a deaf and mute girl who becomes inadvertently becomes the target of a woman-killer.

  • Veeramadevi (Sunny Leone): Sunny Leone is entering the Southern Film industry with a periodic drama i.e. Veeramadevi. She will seen in the role of a warrior princess.

  • Adho Andha Paravai Pola (Amala Paul): A horror thriller set in the backdrop of western ghats, Amala Paul plays a young woman lost in a jungle with just trees and animals for company.

  • Aadai  (Amala Paul): Amala Paul's statements about Aadai indicate that she might have dabbed her hand at direction too with this film. The attention grabbing of a first look poster, a dark comedy genre and a joint directorial venture have piqued the curiosity rate for this one.
