Onbadhula Guru – Silly and Insipid

Comedy is serious business. If gone wrong the joke will end up on you. Onbadhula Guru seems the case in point. This supposedly funny film falls flat with silly and insipid jokes.
Plot
What is the plot? I guess even the makers of this film itself might find this a tricky question. The movie just seems like random scenes put together with no connectivity whatsoever. There was some talk that this is actually a desi version of Hangover. Apart from a scene where the four leads of the film get drunk before an important day this is no comparison to the Hangover. Looks like the director might have wanted to make a spoof. But even on that count the film fails miserably with lame imitations from popular movies. The final product looks like ‘Lollu Sabha’ gone terribly wrong. Subtlety is thrown out of the window with each scene getting louder and louder and almost threatening us to laugh.
Cast
The movie has a capable cast. But there is only so much that they can do. You pity for the likes of Vinay and Sathyan. Not even a single character in the film is well defined. Each of them just pops up on the screen in a perfectly non cohesive manner and enacts popular scenes from mass movies. Even the characters are named such – Billa, Ranga and Kochadaiyan! Lakshmi Rai looks gorgeous and serves the purpose for what she has been roped in. Power star has been included as a marketing strategy and all he has to do is, prance around during the title song.
The ‘Va machi’ song (music director K) is reasonably good and probably the sole positive that comes to mind. Sometimes, unintended humour can work. But Onbadhula Guru fails to provide even that. Some of the humour is crude. But even such humor needs to be done tastefully to make it work.
Bottom line
It turns out be an audacious attack on our senses and leaves our mind numb after the show. The movie finally comes to an end with a shocker announcement that Part II would be coming soon. To sit through the entire movie is a challenge
