Any Body Can Dance (Tamil) Movie Review
by Raven

Any Body Can Dance (ABCD), touted as India’s first 3D dance film, is dubbed into Tamil as ‘Aadalam Boys Chinnatha Dance’ and released. Recently, ‘Podaa Podi’ film had dance as an element but ABCD is all about dance. Directed by Remo D’Souza, Indian Michael Jackson’ Prabhu Deva plays the lead role in the movie. What can be expected out of this movie? Read on.

Plot

The movie has a wafer-thin plot and it is very predictable. Dance choreographer Vishnu (Prabhu Deva) is expelled from ‘Jehangir Dance Company’, owned by Jehangir (Kay Kay Menon). Then, Vishnu decides to train a bunch of unskilled street dancers and make them win the ‘Dance Dil Se’ show title. Will he be able to do it?

Script and Direction

Tushar Hiranandani has written the screenplay for the film. Director Remo D’Souza has tried to make a complete dance film earnestly, but not without flaws. As one would expect from a dance film, the movie relies heftily on dance. The talkie portions are miniscule when compare to dance sequences. The energy quotient of the movie is really high, thanks to the energetic dancers throughout. At times, the dance sequences (although wonderfully choreographed) are over- dramatized and look disjoint from the main plot. Having said that, the dance sequence in rain and the one during the finale stand out from the rest.

The nativity takes a hit as the movie is completely set in Mumbai. The plot is very clichéd. The obstacles are lined up one after the other for the protagonist and his team, and they overcome them every single time. Some scenes get a tad too melodramatic and preachy. The emotional sequences do not strike a chord with the audience as they are poorly enacted.

Cast and Crew

The movie is more about dancing than acting. Credits must be given to actors (rather dancers) for pulling off some amazing dance steps. They seem to dance effortlessly but struggle in dialogue delivery and facial expressions. Prabhu Deva does a stunning solo performance that keeps us in awe but even his acting falls flat.

The 3D effects make the sets look more grandeur and enhance the overall experience. Sachin Jigar’s music is passable but one would have expected more catchy tunes.  Camera work by Vijay Kumar Arora is noteworthy for capturing the swift dance steps effectively. On the flip side, a shooting camera is visible in ‘Vaa Suthi Suthi’ song. They should have taken better efforts to avoid such fundamental mistakes.

Bottomline :  On the whole, ABCD may not be everyone’s cup of tea. But, the movie is worth a watch only if you love dance.
