Kadamban Review - Well made but too simplistic

BharathVijaykumar

Plot:

A tribal youngster leads the fight against a scheming corporate bigwig.

Arya looks the part with his chiseled frame. There have been instances in the past when he looked either a little hesitant or disinterested or even a little too casual in roles that required him to be serious. But here he strikes a balance and comes across as convincing.

The forest setting does make for some interesting viewing in Kadamban and we have an interesting (even if only little) peek into the lifestyle of the inhabitants of the forest. These aspects are captured well and this is the biggest asset of Kadamban. The CG is adequate and while we can see the constraints, at no point it is clumsily done. The central conflict is nicely built up in the first half and the villains seem to have some intelligence upto this. They mean business and we sort of care for Arya and his people.

It is in the second half that Kadamban loosens the grip it had on us. It is nowhere close to being bad but things start to become a little mundane and predictable. This is a straightforward story and we aren't really expecting twists and turns but the underdogs seem to have it very easy from hereon. You do not get any rush seeing them give it back to the villains. The villains on the other hand are suddenly reduced from scheming corporate criminals to mindless rowdies i.e. the kind of men who get paid to look foolish on screen.

Bottomline :

A nicely made smallish film on a big scale. That it keeps things straightforward and too simplistic is what pulls it back a little.
